Mom was my first music teacher. She was a brilliant goddess of love and beauty when I was little. Some of my fondest memories are the hours we spent sitting side by side on the piano bench singing together as she played. Although she became embarrassing, unreasonable and very nearly stupid during my teen years, Mom eventually returned to her former self (except for being tinged with some actual human qualities). Go figure! Anyway, besides loving me like a rock, the best thing she did for me was to support all of my interests with lessons in various arts. Mom enabled me to make music my life. Now the Spring Recital is coming up, and all my students’ Moms & Dads will be present to proudly witness their offspring’s piano progress. I expect that, as usual, I will be overwhelmed with accomplishment and appreciation as I watch “my” kids. The performance is May 15 at 3:30, Northbrae Community Church (Chapel), 941 The Alameda, Berkeley. You’re invited!

ByCynthiaIt was so much fun to sing with the Magnolia Jazz Band again late last month, on such a beautiful day in Napa. It seemed like Summer, but the next thing I knew, it was time to get ready for October Share The Music Day. This is an informal event where the students play for each other and…
Letter to a Special Student
ByCynthiaDear (Adult Student Name Withheld), After several tearful sessions, it’s no wonder you would be thinking of “taking a break” from your singing lessons. Usually when a student quits, my response is, “I understand, and it has been a pleasure working with you.” This is different because I have grown to care about you as…
Creative Adventure
ByCynthiaPhotos of Mom & Dad are proudly displayed on my mantel in honor of their special days. I like to believe they’re watching over me, and trying to help from the other side. Hopefully they feel as proud of me as I felt when “my” kids played their pieces at the Annual Spring Recital last month. My…
Couldn’t Wish for More
ByCynthiaAs it turns out, the audition video for America’s Got Talent can now be 2 to 3 minutes instead of the previous 90 seconds. (I never did figure out how I was going to do the “minute and a half thing” without hacking my precious original to death!) Once the song could be a little longer, it was…
It’s Fall and I’m Havin’ a Ball
ByCynthiaAdventures in music continue as my inspirational originals album moves along. Amidst recording sessions, mix-downs have begun. And next week, I’ll be turning over a finished piano/vocal to the arranger. Can’t wait to hear what he does with it… So Fun! Simultaneously, I’ve been editing the avalanche of videos generated by the jazz gig…
Everything Unfolding As It Should
ByCynthiaThey didn’t cast me. Honestly, my first reaction was surprise! (Color me confident.) At any rate, it’s ok. In fact, it’s good. Auditioning for America’s Got Talent was an amazing adventure, but apparently the Powers That Be have a better way for me to get my songs out to the world. It appears that this…
