If you know me, you know I have a passion for music. True to my inner fish, however, I swim the melodic ocean simultaneously in two directions. First, I swam a long way singing standards wearing the cap of a piano bar entertainer, cabaret artist, singer for a bebop influenced group, and then as a vocalist/bandleader of a nine piece swing band and a jazz quartet/trio/duo. I got awfully tired, and spent a little time just softly floating. Suddenly, from another shore came a gentle breeze whispering uplifting ideas that wanted to be set to music and shared. So, I changed my course, of course. Oh how I love songwriting. It makes time disappear by the hour in just minutes. Now, I’m recording a whole album of inspirational originals. When it’s released, more people will undoubtedly be visiting my website. I certainly should have my latest album plus some older albums for sale on a dedicated “Store” page. Thinking about this change in my site, got me listening to some of my jazz albums. The next thing I knew, I was having so much fun singing along, I booked a jazz gig! Maybe I’ll throw an inspirational original or two into the sets, and get those two fish swimming in the opposite direction toward each other! Hope to see you there…….. Café Leila in Berkeley on Friday August 16 from 6:30 to 9:30. Cynthia Bythell and The Diggin’ the Downsize Reunion Show with Duncan James on Guitar and Richard Saunders on Upright Bass. We plan to release the previously unreleased album we made years ago, and maybe some old friends will even drop by and play some horn. Fun, Fun, Fun! cafeleila.com

ByCynthiaI came with the intention of loving everyone. It was easy. The holding room at the Phoenix Convention Center was wall to wall with brave people living their lives fully. Some of the younger people looked a bit like they were headed for the guillotine, and my heart really went out to them. It made…
“Trick-ling”
ByCynthiaMemories of Halloween come “trick-ling” back to me this time of year. My family lived in a small town where traditional Trick-or-Treat was entirely safe. I especially liked going to the Eminheisers’ house where we were invited in to see the extravagant decorations (nothing to “freak-out” little children in those days). The grand tour ended…
Letter to a Special Student
ByCynthiaDear (Adult Student Name Withheld), After several tearful sessions, it’s no wonder you would be thinking of “taking a break” from your singing lessons. Usually when a student quits, my response is, “I understand, and it has been a pleasure working with you.” This is different because I have grown to care about you as…
Singin’ the Recital Blues
ByCynthiaEach Spring is a battle to avoid feeling stressed behind the upcoming formal recital in May. While it is true that my chill skill continues to increase in measure with each passing year, I apparently still have not achieved victory. It seems the desire for each student to experience a successful performance overwhelms my ability to…
Creative Space
ByCynthiaIt’s that time of the year when lesson cancellations run rampant. Summer vacations definitely take their toll on my teaching income. That’s o.k., life is full of trade-offs. When business is overwhelming, there’s lots of money. But, if it slows down to a dull roar, there’s more personal time. When I was young, I worried if things were slow, then complained that…
Songwriting
ByCynthiaIt’s a little hard to write my note this month because it seems like I should be writing about my Dad. But instead, I’m busy writing songs. If I could pick one thing that I like to do the most, it would be songwriting. Time stops, the world fades away, and I am one with…
