Hardly ever (almost never) get out to hear live music because I’m too busy making my own. It’s no secret that I have a deep passion for writing songs, recording, and singing professionally on stage. For some time now, I’ve been performing/recording inspirational originals. Suddenly, and out of nowhere, the jazz bug has bitten me again. I even booked a show at Café Leila in Berkeley. Okay then, had to go check out Leila’s. It’s a comfy, intimate place with friendly staff and excellent food. Best of all? I’d forgotten how much I enjoy live music, and being part of a happy crowd. Hope you’ll feel the same way when you come to see CYNTHIA BYTHELL & THE DIGGIN’ THE DOWNSIZE DUO REUNION SHOW, AUGUST 16 from 6:30 to 9:30 (no cover) at CAFE LEILA in BERKELEY (+1 (510) 525-7544) We’re going to have a lot of fun celebrating the release of our never before released album. You’ll love master guitarist Duncan James with groovin’ upright bassist Richard Saunders, and the light mix of jazz standards I’ll be singing. And, of course, the performance will include improvised solos by the guys and a bit of scat singing too. Looking forward to meeting you, and setting my jazz self loose again! (The album, Diggin’ The Downsize, is available now on CD Baby and Amazon. It’s a live session recorded in the studio during the time we worked a long run on The San Francisco Bay Champagne Brunch Cruise.)

ByCynthiaWhoa! 2018. Seriously? Sometimes it feels like I’m being pole vaulted through time. There’s never enough of it. The older I get the more important it feels not to fritter any of it away. Precious stuff it is, and easy to get stressed out trying to squeeze in everything I want to do. Funny thing…
Songwriting
ByCynthiaIt’s a little hard to write my note this month because it seems like I should be writing about my Dad. But instead, I’m busy writing songs. If I could pick one thing that I like to do the most, it would be songwriting. Time stops, the world fades away, and I am one with…
2020 Christmas
ByCynthia‘Twas three weeks before Christmas and all through our house, not a person was stirring, but me and my spouse. Two stockings were hung by the chimney with care; Too bad no one would be there to share. Ev’ry night we rested all snug in our bed, while visions of vaccines danced in our heads. …
Holiday Hubbub
ByCynthiaLast night was nearly sleepless, with lists of things to do running through my head, along with startling realizations of things I’d forgotten about entirely (like writing this note to you around the beginning of the month). Sometimes the holidays feel like a fast moving train coming right at me! Fortunately, the rough night prompted…
Tricks & Treats
ByCynthiaIt was so much fun to sing with the Magnolia Jazz Band again late last month, on such a beautiful day in Napa. It seemed like Summer, but the next thing I knew, it was time to get ready for October Share The Music Day. This is an informal event where the students play for each other and…
Love & Appreciation Day?
ByCynthiaWriting a gratitude list of things for which I’m truly thankful, is always enlightening and uplifting for me. Some of my friends don’t find it so easy. One of them explained that he had too many “You should be grateful”s thrown at him as a kid. He definitely picked up a negative feeling about giving…
